PumpKing Competition

On Saturday I attended the PumpKing Competition weigh-in.
It was really great to meet a friendly bunch of people from different Community Gardens.
Other than myself, no one else from our club attended, but I think you would have enjoyed it!

We placed 4th for the Heaviest Marina di Chioggia Pumpkin. More details about the variety can be found here.
We won a book called Shop Local Eat Well, Cooking with seasonal produce in New Zealand by Kathryn Hawkins.

And we also came away with lots of free packets of seeds from the sponsors and some of the community gardens! The seeds include Mesclun, Lettuce, Carrots, Rocket, Red Coral Mizuna, Squire Kale, Parsley, Scarlett Runner Beans and Choko.

Photos from the event can be found here

Garden Fun Day this Friday

A "Garden Fun Day" is a relaxing organised meet up at the Club Gardens for those that can make it, usually involving the planting of new seedlings.

This Friday from 11 am to 1 pm I will be hosting the 2nd Garden Fun Day of the semester.
Come if you can, and stay as long (or as short) as you like.

There are still some seedlings left over from the last Garden Fun Day that would really like to be planted.

The club has tools, and gloves, so you won't need to bring any equipment.
Gardening is an outdoor activity and is weather dependent. If it is raining at the scheduled time, then the event will be postponed until the following week.

Let me know if you are think you might come (either via email, or facebook)  :)

Still plenty of ripe cherry tomatoes in the gardens right now. Normally $3.99 a punnet from the supermarket, these babies are Free!

First Garden Fun Day this Friday

A "Garden Fun Day" is a relaxing organised meet up at the Club Gardens for those that can make it, usually involving the planting of new seedlings.

This Friday from 11 am to 1 pm I will be hosting the first Garden Fun Day of the semester.
Come if you can, and stay as long (or as short) as you like.

I have a bunch of plants that I raised from seed over the summer break that are ready to plant.
The club has tools, and gloves, so you won't need to bring any equipment.

I will bring along my audio system so we have some nice background music.
The forecast is Sunny, so pack your sunblock.

And let me know if you are thinking about coming (either via email, or facebook)  :)

Loads of ripe cherry tomatoes in the gardens right now. Normally $3.99 a punnet from the supermarket, these babies are Free!

A reminder that there is still an opportunity to earn some money for the Club, by manning a Zero Waste Station at an event run by the Auckland Council : The Cape Town to Cairo Event in Browns Bay this Saturday the 8th of March. The volunteers will need to be available from 10am until 4pm. Each station we operate will earn the Club $100.

I haven't had any interest yet, but if this sounds like you, please reply to this email or my own newzealdan@gmail.com.

Garden Club Update, Week 1

Welcome back students

2013 was a great year for the "Garden Club", and this year we will focus on building on our strengths and improving on our weaknesses.

This Wednesday the 26th is Clubs Day, and I am asking for volunteers to help man our stall between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. Clubs Day is a very important day as it exposes new students to the club, and historically this has been our number one source of new members. Let me know if you can help out, even if you can only spare an hour or so - any help will be appreciated.

Regular Garden Fun Days will be resuming shortly, once we have all settled down with our new timetables.

Unrelated to clubs day, there is also an opportunity to earn some money for the Club, by manning a Zero Waste station at an event run by the Auckland Council : The Cape Town to Cairo Event in Browns Bay on the 8th of March. The volunteers will need to be available from 10am until 4pm. Each station we operate will earn the Club $100.

If you can help with Clubs Day or the Zero Waste Event, please reply to this email or my own newzealdan@gmail.com.

On a final note, I am experimenting with a new newsletter/email client, so you may notice a new and changing format over the next few weeks.
