Summer update 6

Date: 20/01/2014Posted by: Dan

One of our members (previous Club President Benita) has landed an opportunity to get an article of our Community Garden in the local newspaper.

The article will help promote and raise awareness of our garden, which is currently the only known Community Garden in Albany.

But before the photos are taken, we have a lot to clean up - the weeds have been very busy, especially the barked area under the 'Orchard'.

If you are able to come along this Wednesday the 22nd from midday to help out, please do.

The photo-op will be the following day, Thursday, and you are welcome to come along. Click the Contacts Tab if you wish to get in touch with me for more details.

The weather forecast suggests that the rain will have stopped by Wednesday, but the ground will still be wet and maybe muddy, so bring appropriate footwear :)

For those of you who are not facebook users, this one is for you

A Photo Album has been added to the Garden Club website, and now you can view our entire set of photos. For some of you this will be the first time you have seen any photos.

For others this might actually be the first time you have seen the Club Gardens! What you might notice in the photos is that there is usually only a few members at the gardens.

If you have never been before, maybe you could make our End of year Garden Party your first time. It's this Sunday, December 22 at 2:00pm

There will be some food and non-alcoholic beverages. There will be also be cake! Choices are from the Top Selling Cakes at thecheesecakeshop, let me know your vote.

Will bring along the Club of the Year shield and Certificate for viewing, and get a group photo.

RSVP via email or the facebook event so I can cater enough food.

To help cover the cost of the food, we will be accepting small-change donations.

If the weather is good, it will be held at the club gardens. If it's not so good then it will be on the covered courtyard outside the Student Central building.

Hope to see you there!

Summer update 3

Date: 02/12/2013Posted by: Dan

Garden Fun Day on Sunday the 8th December.

Come along from 1pm, stay as long as you like. I will be there for a few hours at least, and will be available on facebook.

There is a big mound of mulch to spread around the fruit trees. If there is time we can continue to assemble more Strawberry Towers. I would like more volunteers to become Seed Raisers - this will mean taking home some soil, pots, and seeds.

Bring your hat, sunglasses and sunscreen :)

Let us know if you think you can make it by joining the event.

As always, gardening is an outdoor activity and is weather permitting.

Summer update 2

Date: 22/11/2013Posted by: Dan

Short notice I know, but I will host a Garden Fun Day on Sunday the 24th November.

Come along from 1pm, stay as long as you like. I will be there for a few hours at least, and will be available on facebook.

Still loads of stuff to do. Now that the new garden bed is almost complete (minus the pukeko frame), need to load it up with compost and soil to prepare it for planting. I will have the Giant Pumpkin seedlings with me to plant finally. If there is time we can continue to assemble more Strawberry Towers. I would also like some volunteers to become Seedling Raisers - this will mean taking home some soil, pots, and seeds.

We are going to have our first 'Summer time' Garden Fun Day this Sunday the 17th November, if you can make it.

Come along from 1pm, stay as long as you like. I will be there for a few hours at least, and will be available on facebook.

Loads of stuff to do. Going to complete the first new garden bed, prepare it for planting, plant the Giant Pumpkin seedlings, continue assembling the Strawberry Towers, arrange seedling growing, and much more! Bring your sunscreen :)

If you are particularly interested in spending some extra time at the club gardens over the summer period let me know, and I will add you to a contacts list, so that it will be easier to organise social gardening.

The Clubs, Societies and Sports Awards was held only a few hours ago , and it is with pride and joy that I announce the Garden Club has taken home the Overall Club Of The Year Award for 2013!

Congratulations everyone and thankyou for all your hard work!

To celebrate, the club will throw a Garden Party after the exam period. More information to come close to the time :)

With everyone busy with exam study, there aren't any official Garden Fun Days scheduled, but you are always welcome to visit. You can always pop in at the usual time and see if anyone else is there (Wednesday 12:30pm).

Of course there will be scheduled Garden Fun days during the summer for those that are keen. Let me know if that is something you might be interested in.

We will have a bunch of new and exciting projects to launch in 2014, so keep in touch :)

Week 12 update

Date: 15/10/2013Posted by: Dan

Its the last week of lectures, and the last week for an official Garden Fun Day.
Meet at the club gardens this Wednesday the 16th from 12:30-1:30pm. You are welcome to stay as long as you like, but those are the times I will be there (I have lectures otherwise). I have some veggie seeds that are ready for their growing season.

Let us know if you think you can make it; either by posting on the event on facebook group, or by replying to this email.

Don't worry, if your still keen to garden during the summer period just get in touch with me via email, or post on the facebook group.

As always, gardening is an outdoor activity and is weather dependant. This Wednesday is forecast to be sunny, but if it is pouring down will have to postpone.

Also, if you think you might be interested in coming to the Clubs, Societies and Sports Awards Dinner which is being held on Monday 21st October, 6pm to 8pm, you can sign up here. Three of the Garden Club committee members are going, and we'd be keen to have a few members come. There are only a few tickets left, so you'd better be quick, and its free!

Lastly, I have finally uploaded the meeting minutes to this years Annual General Meeting, held on August 20th. You can find the PDF on the front page of our website.

Good luck with exams!

Date: 08/09/2013Posted by: Dan

The frame to replace garden bed#1 arrived last week.

If you are interested, this Wednesday the 11th from 12:30 til 1:30 pm I will be at the club gardens, dismantling bed#1 to make space to assemble the new bed from the kitset shown in the photo above.

Will need to move a bit of soil around, and because it has been wet it might pay to bring your gumboots :P

Week 6 update 3

Date: 24/08/2013Posted by: Dan

There was going to be a Garden Fun Day this Sunday the 25th but I'm afraid it has to be postponed.

Instead it will be held the following Sunday (1st September).

There will also be a Garden Fun Day this coming Wednesday the 28th.

If you are thinking about coming to any Garden Fun Days, please join the relevant event posted on the facebook group or reply to this email. This will make it easier to plan the event.

Week 3 update

Date: 30/07/2013Posted by: Dan

Just a few things:

  • Tomorrow (Wednesday) if you are not going to the ASA Annual General Meeting, the Garden Club is having a Garden Fun day. So if you can make it, meet at the club gardens from 12:30 pm :) .
  • Next Friday the 9th August from 2 pm - 3:30 pm is an ASA Clubs Workshop - this is where information and advice will be provided regarding club grants, policies and the often overlooked topic of succession planning. Food will be provided, and there will be $50 deposit into our club account for us to spend on whatever we choose for the club.
If you think you might be interested in taking on a committee role with the Gardening Club (i.e. President, Secretary, Treasurer & vices), then it would be a good idea to come to this. Please let me know before Friday if you are interested. Can be up to 3 people including myself.
  • The Garden Club needs to hold its Annual General Meeting in the coming weeks. We will need as close to full attendance as possible. I have made a question/poll on our facebook group to find out the most suitable time for it - please select/add a time, or email me.
  • And lastly an update on the progress with the Strawberry Tower project. As you can see in the photo above we have completed the first Strawberry Tower, and a 2nd has been assembled too. So thats 1 down, another 7 to go!
