About

What is the Massey University Community Gardening Club?

The aim of this club is to enhance the Massey University campus by creating a sense of community identity among our students and staff, to heighten awareness and appreciation of the earth we share, and help reduce the food budget strain.

Other goals include building local resiliance, fostering collaboration, educating students and staff about gardening, donate excess produce to student services or the community.

A core process of this club is to be more than just sustainable. Not only do we seek to improve the lives of the people who are involved in the club, the world and environment need to be in better condition because of it.

Since when?

With humble beginnings the club formed in late 2011, and the first plants planted were some Taro.
Unfortunately due to the poor soil quality they didn't fair too well.

This led to a series of raised garden beds being built. (There are a lot of Pukekoes living around the university, who have a habit of pulling out seedlings - and that is why there is wire netting over the garden beds - ugly but necessary).Garden beds

We are up to 4 beds now, and are in the process of rebuilding the beds with high quality macrocarpa sleepers.Garden beds
